Michael Jordan: A Short Bio

Michael Jordan: A Short Bio

Michael Jeffery Jordan is the most respected name in the world of basketball. Born on February 17, 1963, in New York City, Jordan was responsible for making National Basketball Association or the NBA famous, during the 1980s and 1990s. He is the fourth child of his parents, James R. Jordan, Sr. and Deloris Jordan.

He developed his interest for basketball and baseball in Emsley A. Laney High School in Wilmington. Initially he was rejected because of his inadequate height. Jordan grew from 5′ 11” to 6′ 3” in just few months with the help of intensive training to get into the basketball team. He got a basketball scholarship in 1981 from the University of North Carolina because of his impressive records in schools. In the 1982 NCAA Championship game he made the game winning jump shot, which he describes as the major turning point in his career as a basketball sportsman.

He started his professional career in 1984 by joining NBA’s Chicago Bulls. He immediately became a public image by his well-known scoring and leaping skills. Just after a month after his joining, Jordan was featured on the cover page of Sports Illustrated with the title ‘A Star is Born’. He was nicknamed Air Jordan after his airiness when he performed the famous slam-dunk from the foul line. He got his first NBA championship in the year 1991 and became a well-known defensive player after that. He made a hat trick by winning the NBA championship consecutively three times from 1991-1993.

In October 1993, he took a temporarily retired from basketball, to pursue his interest in baseball and also because he lost interest in basketball due to his father’s murder the same year, to join back in 1995 again. He made a hat trick again by winning the NBA championships from 1196-1998. He took a break again in 1999 to returned back again in 2001, but this time he joined the Washington Wizards. He played with the team till 2003.

A day before a match against the New York Knicks, Michael Jordan was seen gambling in the Atlantic City. A year before, he said to have lost $ 57,000 in gambling. When asked about this on a television channel, he said that he would never risk his family and career to gambling.

Jordan was part of two Olympic gold medal winning American basketball teams. His team won the first gold medal in the 1984 Summer Olympics and the second one was in the 1992 Summer Olympic games. He set a record in NBA by making the highest career regular season scoring average of 30.1 points per game.

On a lighter note, Michael Jordan was a hot name in the world of advertisement. Some of the brands, which used his name, are Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Chevrolet, Gatorade, Hanes, Ball Park Franks, etc. Nike made a signature for Jordan named the Air Jordan. He was shown in the Looney Tones Cartoon, which also made him appear in the feature film “Space Jam” in 1996. The name Air Jordan itself became a great marketing tool. The television ratings increased rapidly when his match was aired and every time he left the team, it would automatically lower.

His third retirement was the final retirement after which he played golf in various charity tournaments. He even started his line of clothing named after him. He was made the managing member of Basketball operations of the Charlotte Bobcats in June 2005 and is still working with them till the current date. He has two sons, Jeffery Michael and Marcus James, and one daughter, Jasmine, from his marriage to Juanita Vanoy.

His individual achievements are fourteen NBA All-Star Game appearances, ten All-NBA First Team Designations, ten scoring titles, nine All-Defensive First Team Honors, five NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, three stealing titles, and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 1988. ESPN named him the Greatest North America Athlete of the 20th century in 1999. Jordan is one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.

Babe Ruth: A Short Bio

Babe Ruth: A Short Bio

George Herman Ruth, Jr. is the legendary baseball player of the United States. He had many nicknames like Babe, The Sultan of Swat, The Colossus of Clout and The Great Bambino. An American Major League baseball player, Ruth was one of the famous baseball players of all times and according to many he is the no.1 player in history.

Born to Kate Schamberger Ruth and George Herman Ruth, Babe Ruth was a native of Maryland. He was admitted in St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, where he met Brother Matthias who cultivated his interest in the game of baseball. He taught him to hit, field and even pitch.

Ruth started his career as a starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, he spent most of his an outfielder with the New York Yankees, starting form 1920. With the Red Sox he won eighty-nine games and lost forty-six. He played as an outfielder in one hundred and eleven games and he broke the record of Ned Williamson by hitting twenty-nine runs, which is the maximum number of runs in a single season, in 1919.

Red Sox owner sold Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1920. He turned out to be the golden duck for the team as in the next fifteen season, he not only lead the league by walks, runs, home runs, and RBI but also placed it in the top ten in slugging percentage, batting average, and total bases. The team even won seven American League Pennants and four World Series titles. In 1921, he made a record by hitting fifty nine home runs in a single season which he broke himself by hitting sixty in 1927. Nobody else could break this record for the next thirty-four years.

Ruth also appeared in many movies and he became a very popular media figure. He featured in the silent era films like Speedy and Pride of the Yankees.

Ruth’s health began deteriorating in 1946 when he developed a malignant tumor that spread over his neck and his left carotid artery. He received many treatments during which he lost eighty pounds. At that time Dr. Brian Hutchings had developed a new drug named teropterin, which showed improvement in leukemia patients. Ruth was induced with this experimental drug, which gave him headaches, hoarseness and swallowing problems. From June 1947, he was given injections, which proved to bring improvements in his health. His case was also discussed at the fourth Annual internal research congress, but now his conditions is being recognized as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which is a very rare tumor located near the Eustachian tube for which the patient should be given radiation therapy and concurrent chemotherapy.

During his marriage to Helen Woodford, Ruth adopted a daughter. But after his separation with his first wife, whom he married in 1914, in early 1920s, she died in a house fire. He married actress Claire Hodgson on April 17, 1929, with whom he stayed till death. Ruth liked to spend his winters in Florida playing golf. After his retirement from the game he settled in a winter beachfront home in Florida. Babe Ruth expired at the age of fifty-three, on August 16, 1948.

History of Baseball

History of Baseball

Baseball is one of the popular sports played all over America. It is the national sports of the United States of America. This sport involves two teams of nine members each. The game is played basically with the help of bat and ball. The pitcher hauls a hard leather covered ball towards the batter, an opponent, who hits it with a wooden cylindrical bat. While the opponent team tries to catch the ball, the batter has to run in counter clockwise direction covering four markers called bases. The match is divided into nine parts called innings. Both the teams ball and score runs in each inning. If a team gets three outs, it’s half-inning.

There are three versions of baseball, including the modern version, which was developed in the eighteenth century. There are arguments on how and where the game originated. According to some reports, the game is an extension of an older game rounders and it originated in Great Britain. British people who came to America during the late 1700s brought the sport. The professional Major League Baseball is sub-categorized into the American League and the National League with east, west and central divisions in each. In the American League, the tenth player, also known as a designated hitter, is expected to bat for the pitcher where as in the National League, the pitcher bats.

Cincinnati Red Stockings was the first established professional baseball club. The fever began catching the citizens of United States in the 1860s and newspapers were referring to it as the National Game or National Pastime. The National League was formed in 1876 and after several trials; American League was founded in 1901. At that time the game was played very aggressively than when compared to the game that is being played today. It was more like a war and the era was named as the dead-ball era. After the 1920s the sport became more civilized by introduction of many rules. It was also during this time that the famous Baseball player Babe Ruth entered the sport. Before, the scoring was very low but Babe Ruth proved that power hitting is obviously the way of the game. The structure of the ball was also worked upon so as to make it travel farther than before.

Baseball has also influenced Canada and there are many local minor league teams. After America and Canada, baseball league was formed in Cuba in 1878. Their national team consists of one of the strongest international players. After the World War I, baseball leagues began forming in Australia, Puerto Rico, Netherland, and Japan. After the World War II, more countries followed suit like Mexico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Now many of the European and Asian countries have pro and professional leagues.

Tournaments, which include baseball in their curriculum or are based on it, are Olympic games, Baseball World Cup, World Baseball Classic, etc. These are held by the International Baseball Federation, which was formed in 1938. The IOC has voted that baseball and softball tournaments won’t be a part of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games preceding. This is because there is a lack of good participation because of the seasonal restriction. These sports are only played during the summer and the Major League Baseball does not give a break to the players in order to participate. Because of the seasonal obstruction and high demand by fans, this kind of break is difficult to fit in.

Hey, Coach!

Hey, Coach!

Even though most state that coaching is simply to teach others how to play a game, it is much more than this. The effects that coaching can have on a young child or youth, can help them to gain some important tools that they can keep for the rest of their lifetime. The tools that you will be teaching to your players will help them to grow and flourish, no matter what turn they make in their lifetime.

The first major lesson that individuals can learn from playing on a team that you are coaching comes from the relationships that they build with each other. When one is able to work with a team, no matter what the project, and learn how to compromise and fit into the bigger picture, it makes it easier for them later on. The youth and children that are involved will grow up with ideas about what it means to help others as well as take on their own leadership roles. They will also be able to see these same relationship values coming from the leadership role that you present.

For the individual child, participating in sports can have the same major effect on them. This first begins with the child having the ability to understand the importance of health and exercise in order to stay at their best. Recent studies have shown that adults that played sports when they were younger are much more active and exercise as adults up to three times more than other average adults.

Beyond this, children and youth will gain insights into which they are as individual players. Not only does their physical health improve, but their mental health will as well. Once a child or youth understands the game and begins to get positive feedback from the moves that they make, they are likely to also get a good boost of self-esteem. This doesn’t just happen with self-esteem, but also with perceptions of themselves, such as body image. The attitudes that the children learn with positive outlooks on their mental and physical health, will eventually carry over into how they see themselves in the future and as adults. The foundation begins when they are young and playing on any type of field.

What does all of this mean to you as a coach? The basic rule is that you should have the ability to coach right. You are not just playing a game. You are also building a foundation for them. This foundation includes personal changes that are important to the child as well as a building of who they are mentally, physically and relation to others. If you want to play a good game as a coach, it means making sure that everyone starts off on the right foot.

David Beckham was born in London, England. His father, David Edward Alan Ted Beckham was a kitchen fitter and a hairdresser. Beckham’s maternal grandfather was a Jew and was greatly influenced by him, but he admitted that he doesn’t follow any faith in particular. His father was a great fan of Manchester United and his son inherited this passion. David Beckham’s talent surfaced when he won a talent search competition held by the FC Barcelona. He was a team member of the Ridgeway Rovers, a team that was coached by his father. He played for the club Tottenham Hotspur, which was also his first club. He took training from the Bradenton Preparatory Academy and Manchester United’s Youth Training Scheme.

In 1992, he played for the Manchester United’s team as a substitute. After that, he signed his very first professional contract. Beckham became a household name when he scored a marvelous goal in August 1996, against Wimbledon. His debut in World Cup was on September 1, 1996 in the England vs. Moldova match. PPA Young voted him as the Player of the Year in that year. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he played all the matches and in the finals his team played with France. Due to his bad performance in it, the media and supporters, who blamed him for England’s elimination, accused him. He even received death threats and the whole incident was the story line of his Adidas advertisement.

England won the FA Cup and Champions League in the 1998-99 seasons and David Beckham was a part of that United Team. Although he was criticized from time to time, about his World Cup performance, he didn’t give up and provided significant performance and goals afterwards. United forgave him when he was the reason behind the victory at the league championship. In 1999, he won the European Footballer of the Year award and FIFA World Player of the Year title. But England’s defeat in Euro 2000 brought back the criticism from the supporters.

Union team’s manager Kevin Keegan resigned on November 15, 2000, following which David Beckham was made the captain of the team. Under his captaincy, England qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals. His superb performance in the finals inspired many of the poor performing team member. He again won the FIFA World Player of the Year award and BBC presented him the Sports Personality of the Year, in 2001.

Beckham broke his second metatarsal bone in his left foot on April 10, 2002. The media speculated that the injury was done on purpose as it involved Aldo Duscher of Argentina who was in the opponents team and both the teams were going to face each other in the World Cup.

He became the highest paid player in the world in 2002, when he signed a 3-year contract with Manchester United in May. He was given extra money to buy rights for his images. Advertisements, endorsement deals were meant huge money for Beckham.

After the recovery from the injury, David Beckham returned to play at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He got a winning goal, which knocked out Argentina. Later England was knocked out by Brazil. He was a victim to another injury in 2002-03 seasons and he was unable to play in the Manchester Team. His terms worsened with the manager Sir Alex Ferguson when he threw a boot at Beckham which injured his eye, following a lost match.

Beckham’s performance was again criticized in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. England lost in the quarterfinals and Beckham step down from captaincy. His final match was with Real Madrid on June 17th, 2007.

In his career of eleven years, he made a total of two hundred and sixty six appearances and got sixty-one goals. He has six Premiership titles, one UEFA Champions League, two FA Cups, and one FA Youth Cup to his credit.

Science and Swimming

Science and Swimming
Swimming is as old as the Stone Age. Writing references can be dated back to 2000 BC and drawings were found in the cave of swimmers near Sura, Egypt. Competitions in swimming started somewhere around 1800, in Europe. Until then the breaststroke was very famous and John Arthur Trudgen started the front crawl or the trudgen in 1873. It was added as a sport in the 1896 Athens Summer Olympics, which were the first modern Olympics. Butterfly stroke was recognized in 1952, before which it was known as a variation of breaststroke.
The water within the human body has a little less density compared to that of the water outside, which forces the body to the surface. To move forward, the water around should be pushed backward and to float, the water should be pushed downward. The pushing is done by using hands as paddles and kicking with the legs. It takes less effort to swim and float in the ocean than in a swimming pool because salty water has more density than fresh water because of the salts.
The basic principle involved in all swimming styles is that the body should be kept parallel to the surface of the water and the hands should be positioned in outward direction, inline with the head, so as to cut though the water and reduce the friction. The more the body is slanted, the more the drag. Also, by extending the hands, the average length at the water line is increased which is directly proportional to the increase in the speed.
Swimmers who have a good acceleration of hips have a good hand force. The force of the hand is related to the rotation of the hips and not the muscles in the arms. The stronger the hip muscles, the more the torque generated. The body should be in an incline position so as to reduce the frontal cross-section and drag. By doing so the shoulders do not generate bow waves and the water line is not broken.
According to hydrodynamics, the movement of the hands and legs, from back to front, should be as much in air as in water, during the recovery stroke. The shoulder rotation is necessary for the forward motion and it requires strong abdominal muscles. Some of the swimmers flatten their palms to move the water backward and some spread their fingers slightly. Breathing is another important factor to be worked on while swimming. Correct way of breathing can increase performance and decrease fatigue. The body should be trained to work on less amount of oxygen because professional swimmers take breath in one stroke and let it out slowly till the fourth stroke. Taking a deep breath and submerging in the water, while kicking in the water, can control breath.
Children can be made to join summer camps that give swimming lessons. Swimmers need to wear body skin kind of swimsuits so as to reduce the drag and beginners can use aids such as Styrofoam Board until they learn swimming properly. Beginners should concentrated on increasing the strength along with the other techniques.

Swimming is a great exercise as there is less impact on the joints and bones because the density of water is similar to the density of the human body and the water supports the body. It is usually used to treat people with certain disabilities and injuries. Swimming is an aerobic exercise and is a good way to beat stress.
The problems and hazards related to swimming are drowning and water inhalation in a contaminated environment. Extreme exhaustion can lead to unconsciousness. Weaker people should avoid it because it can be a cause to heart attacks, stroke, shallow water blackout and carotid sinus syncope. Excess water intake in salty water can form foam in the lungs, which effects breathing badly. Regular swimmers get exostosis or swimmers’ ear, which is abnormal growth in the ear canal and athlete’s foot, which is bacterial infection in between the toes. Chemicals in the swimming pools can cause skin and eye irritation and can even discolor the hair. Asthmatics should avoid excess swimming in swimming pool, as the chlorine inhalation will affect their lungs badly.  While swimming in ocean, precautions should be taken, as there is an increased risk of getting jellyfish sting or harm from any other aquatic animal.

Problems faced by Olympic Games

Problems faced by Olympic Games

The Olympics have seen both its good and bad days during its journey from early B.C. to this day.  Some of the major issues, which caused problems, were political involvement, doping, boycotting and violence.

The most famous political involvement was by the German Nazis, in the 1936 Berlin’s Summer Olympics. They used it as a platform to spread their ideas. Until the 1952 Helsinki’s Summer Olympics, The Soviet Union didn’t participate in the Olympics and had conducted international games event of their own named Spartakiads, since 1928. Many associations made by communists didn’t participated in the Olympics and instead opted for the Spartakiads and some of the athletes belonging to these associations, who wished to participate were barred from the Olympics.

In the 1968 Summer Olympics, which was held in Mexico City, another political controversy took place involving two African Americans, John Carlos and Tommie Smith, winners of the two hundred track and field races. They performed the black power salute on the victory stand. This angered the IOC’s autocratic president Avery Brundage and he ordered the USOC to either send the two athletes back home or to withdraw the whole team of track and field. And because of this the athletes were send back home. Iran had ordered their athletes not to participate in any Olympic heat, semi finals or finals, which had participants from Israel. An Iranian judo wrestler didn’t participate in the Olympic hear because there was an Israeli wrestler participating in it, in the 2004 Olympics.

Performance enhancing drugs and doping are other major threats to the smooth running of the Olympic games. It was at the start of the twentieth century that the Olympics participants started using drugs to better their performance. The first recorded incident was that of Thomas J. Hicks who was given brandy and strychnine during the race, which helped him to get the winning position of the marathon, in the year 1904. When the drug abuse began to rise to a considerable level, a ban was levied in the mid 1960s. After that IOC, too, implemented the ban in 1967.

Drugs abuse by athletes took its own toll. Enemark Jensen was believed to have died of heavy doping, when he collapsed in a cycling race in Rome. Over a period of thirty-eight years, seventy-four athletes were tested positive to doping and they were deprived of their medals. The very first athlete to have tested positive for drugs was Hans Gunnar Liljenwall at the 1968 Summer Olympics, after which his bronze medal was taken away from him. In spite of the tests, many athletes have taken the risk of taking drugs and were not caught in the process. Some of the East German females participants were given anabolic steroids by their coaches, as part of a government policy.

The World Anti-doping Agency was formed in 1999 to fight doping. Many of the cross-county skiing and weightlifting medallists who were found guilty were stripped of their medals in the 2000 Summer Olympic games.

Switzerland, Spain, and Netherlands boycotted the 1956 Melbourne Olympics due to the restriction set by the Hungarian Uprising by the Soviet Union. Because of the Suez Crisis, Egypt, Lebanon, Cambodia and Iraq also boycotted the Olympics. The number of nations that participated in the 1980 Moscow Olympics was merely eighty, which is the lowest after the 1956 Olympics. This was because United States and sixty-four other nations rebelled against Soviet invasion on Afghanistan. As revenge, the Soviet Union and fourteen other nations didn’t participate in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, giving the reason that they fear the safety of their athletes.

Violence was seen in the Olympics since its inception, although in ancient Greece, wars were brought to a halt during the games for the safety of the spectators and the athletes. The 1916 Olympics was cancelled due to the World War I and the 1940 Summer Olympics and the 1944 Winter Olympics were cancelled due to the World War II. A bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta killed two and injured one hundred and eleven people.

The International Olympic Committee has been trying to make the Olympic events more friendly and peaceful. They to stop doping and to ensure a healthy competition also introduced Blood testing. The security has been tightened to combat any terrorist attacks. The efforts have been taken to retain the true sprit of the game.

Cycling

Cycling Great - Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong, born on September 18, 1971 is a professional road-racing cyclist. He started his career by winning in an adult competition at the age of twelve. He was initially a tri-athlete and was ranked #1 in 1987-88 Tri-Fred. He attained the status of professional tri-athlete and in 1989 and 1990; he became the sprint course triathlon champion. He finished the race at fourteenth position in the 1992 Summer Olympics. He became the youngest rider to get the World Road Race championship.

He won the most prestigious race, Tour de France, seven times consecutively, from 1999-2005. By this, he broke the previous record set by Miguel Indurian, who won the race five times consecutively. ABC titled him as the Wide World Sports Athlete of the Year in 1999. Sports Illustrated magazine honored him by naming him as the Sportsman of the year in 2002. For four consecutively years, from 2002-2005 he was named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. BBC, in 2003, gave him the Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award.

He underwent brain and testicular surgery for getting treatment for testicular cancer, in 1996. The nonseminomatous testicular cancer was detected at the third stage and the cancer had spread to his brain, lungs and abdomen. His chances of living were only three percent and he opted for a dangerous chemotherapy so as to resume his career. His tremendous recovery and his success inspired him to lay the foundation of his charity, Lance Armstrong Foundation, in 1997. He went back to cycling after three years to win for the first time in Tour de France title by beating Alex Zulle by seven minutes and thirty-seven seconds. He was yet to win over Marco Pantani and Jan Ullrich who were big personalities in cycling and didn’t attend due to some health issues.

Armstrong faced both of them in 2000, and Armstrong defeated both of them by six minutes and two seconds. He continued to do so in the next four consecutive years. Some people doubt his achievements and say that Armstrong took performance-enhancing drugs to win in some cases. But none of them could be verified with good evidence.

He supported his victories by stating that he had trained for months together in Spain. He aimed only for the Tour de France and didn’t participate in any other competition, which gave him the chance to train for one hundred and eighty days at a stretch. During that period former cyclist Chris Carmichael, who was also his coach, trained him.

Armstrong was able to retain higher cadence in a lower gear when compared to past champions who utilized a high gear and brute strength. High cadence leads to less leg muscles fatigue when compared to lower cadence, which leads to severe leg muscle contractions. He also had a high aerobic threshold. His high pedaling cadence was attributed to his low lactate level, which was his most unusual quality.

Although his team wasn’t that strong initially in the Tour de France, his later victories brought up the team level. Armstrong is part of the US Postal Service cycling team. But his team member weren’t a match to his caliber and often he was isolated. He strengthened the team by making sponsors and equipment suppliers to work in harmony. Instead of getting his bicycle parts being designed by different companies who hardly interact with each other, he made the sponsors and suppliers to work closely so as get complete advantage of all the resources. Many in the cycling circuit later adapted this approach.

Born as Lance Edward Gunderson, appeared in the movies Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, in 2004, and You, Me and Dupree, in 2006. Armstrong took his retirement at the closing of the 2005 Tour de France racing event, on July 24, 2005. After retirement he concentrated on his charity foundation and has taken part in many marathons
